So, What Exactly Are Silverfish?
Despite their name, silverfish aren’t fish at all.
They’re small, wingless insects known for their silvery-gray scales and distinctive wiggling movement that resembles a fish swimming through water. Most grow to about half an inch long and have three tail-like appendages extending from their rear.
What’s truly remarkable is that silverfish are among the oldest insects on Earth.
Scientists estimate their ancestors have existed for more than 300 million years-long before dinosaurs appeared.
In other words, if silverfish have survived mass extinctions, they probably aren’t too worried about your bathroom.
What Does Finding a Silverfish Actually Mean?
The good news?
Finding a silverfish doesn’t mean your house is dirty.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions people have.
Silverfish are attracted primarily to three things:
1. Moisture
Silverfish love humid environments.
That’s why they’re commonly found in:
- Bathrooms
- Laundry rooms
- Basements
- Crawl spaces
- Kitchens
- Areas around leaky pipes
If you’re seeing silverfish regularly, your home may have excess moisture somewhere.
Sometimes the source is obvious.
Sometimes it’s hidden behind walls or under flooring.
