How to Make Savory Breakfast Pop-Tarts

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crispy. Sprinkle in the flour, whisk in the milk until thickened, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • In a separate pan, scramble the eggs to your desired doneness, then set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening and butter until coarse crumbs form. Add an egg, vinegar, and cold water, then mix until a dough forms. Chill briefly if possible.
  • Roll the dough to about ⅛ inch thick on a floured surface and cut into rectangles measuring 3x4 inches.
  • Place half of the rectangles on a lined baking sheet. Brush edges with egg wash, add a spoonful of the sausage gravy and scrambled eggs, then cover with remaining rectangles. Crimp edges to seal.
  • Brush tops with egg wash, sprinkle with cheese, and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a balanced meal, serve with fresh fruit or a light salad. These pop-tarts are best enjoyed immediately but can be stored in the fridge or frozen for later use.
