Instructions
Make the Orange Dough
In a bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water, 1 packet of active dry yeast, and ½ of the sugar (about 1 tablespoon). Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it bubbles.
In another bowl, add 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of melted butter, ¼ tablespoon of salt, and a few drops of orange food coloring. Mix well.
Pour the yeast mixture into the dry mixture and stir. Gradually add more flour (up to 2 cups more) until you form a soft dough.
Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about an hour in a warm place.
Make the Black Dough
Repeat the first step with the remaining warm water, yeast, sugar, and melted butter for the black dough.
Mix 2 cups of flour, the remaining salt, and 2 tablespoons of activated charcoal powder in a separate bowl.
Combine the two mixtures, adding flour until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes.
Put it in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about an hour.
Shape the Loaf
After the doughs have risen, punch them down. Divide each dough into two equal pieces.
Roll out each piece into long ropes. Twist one orange rope with one black rope. Shape it into a loaf or braid it.
Place it in a greased loaf pan.
Bake the Halloween Loaf
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Allow the shaped loaf to rise for about 30 minutes while the oven heats up.
Bake for 30-35 minutes until the bread is golden brown. Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Keep the bread in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap. Store it at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
