Mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl for the coating.
Whisk together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg until well combined.
Cream together 1/3 cup vegetable shortening and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy, then incorporate 1 egg.
Combine the dry ingredients with 1/2 cup milk and the creamed mixture, mixing gently until just combined.
Scoop the batter into your prepared muffin pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full. Bake for 13-15 minutes.
Dip each warm puff in melted butter, then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture while still warm.
