Ingredients

  • 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 cup sugar, divided
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp grated orange peel
  • 2 packets dry active yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup almonds, ground
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1/4 cup orange juice

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, 1/3 cup sugar, salt, orange peel, and yeast.
  • Warm milk and butter in a saucepan until melted. Add to flour mixture with the egg. Beat 2–3 minutes.
  • Stir in remaining flour until a stiff dough forms. Cover and let rise 35–50 minutes until doubled.
  • Mix powdered sugar, softened butter, ground almonds, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create the filling.
  • Roll dough into a 22×12-inch rectangle. Spread filling over half and fold dough over.
  • Cut crosswise into 20–22 strips. Twist each strip several times and shape into swirls. Let rise 30–45 minutes.
  • Bake at 375°F for 9–12 minutes. Mix glaze and brush over rolls.
  • Return to oven for 3–5 minutes until lightly browned.

Notes

For best texture, allow dough to rise fully. Twist strips tightly to create defined swirls. Add extra orange zest for stronger citrus flavor.
