Ingredients

  • 4 cups russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • to taste salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in milk until smooth and thickened. Add garlic, salt, and pepper, then stir in 1 cup cheese.
  • Layer sliced potatoes in the baking dish and pour cheese sauce evenly over them.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes.
  • Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Slice potatoes evenly and consider adding onions, bacon, or different cheeses for variation.
