Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.33 cup cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 0.5 tsp white pepper
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.25 cups brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 0.66 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.66 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease muffin tins.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and all spices.
  • Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in molasses and buttermilk.
  • Gently mix dry ingredients into wet mixture. Stir in hot water and raisins.
  • Fill muffin cups just over halfway. Bake 20–24 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Mix powdered sugar, vanilla, and water. Drizzle glaze over warm cakes.

Notes

Serve warm for best flavor. The spices deepen after one day of resting.
