2. Pregnant Women
Pregnancy significantly increases the likelihood of experiencing night cramps, particularly during the second and third trimesters.
Why It Happens:
Several factors may contribute:
- Increased weight and pressure on leg muscles
- Changes in circulation
- Shifting hormone levels
- Greater nutritional demands
- Possible deficiencies in magnesium or other minerals
While usually harmless, frequent or severe cramping should always be discussed with a healthcare provider during pregnancy.
3. Athletes and Highly Active Individuals
People who exercise intensely may experience more nighttime cramping than the general population.
Why It Happens:
Exercise can lead to:
- Muscle fatigue
- Fluid loss through sweating
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Overworked muscle fibers
The risk increases after prolonged activities such as:
- Running
- Cycling
- Hiking
- Competitive sports
Ironically, both too much activity and too little activity can contribute to cramps.
