The day after my mother’s funeral, the man who had lived behind our house for as long as I could remember was gone.
I had known this was a possibility.
Victor had no formal shelter, no permanent arrangement, and nothing that would compel him to stay once the woman who had anchored him to this place was gone.
Still, when I arrived and found his makeshift camp empty, a cold unease settled over me.
Then I saw him.
Standing beside a black SUV.
Holding my mother’s silver locket.
The same locket she had always claimed was lost.
“No,” Victor said softly. “She told you it was.”
