The Celebration of Betrayal
I moved closer to the hallway, every instinct telling me to turn around and leave.
Instead, I listened.
Richard stood near the library entrance, a champagne glass dangling from his fingers. Beside him was a young woman with long dark hair and a pale blue dress stretched over a pregnant belly.
She couldn’t have been older than thirty.
The guests around them laughed politely at something Richard said.
Then he continued.
“Laura thinks she built this company.”
A few people shifted uncomfortably.
“Truth is, she was useful. That’s all.”
The words landed harder than any slap ever could.
Useful.
Twenty-two years of marriage.
Useful.
I tightened my grip on the blue folder.
Inside were documents proving something Richard clearly didn’t know.
The company wasn’t his anymore.
Not really.
