The ink on my divorce decree was barely dry when my father caught my wrist outside the courthouse.
“Change every PIN. Right now.”
I did.
At the time, I thought he was being overprotective.
By midnight, I realized he was being prophetic.
The Declined Card
Three minutes after Daniel handed over my former corporate card, the waiter returned.
His face was professional.
His eyes were not.
“I’m very sorry, sir.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“The transaction was declined.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Daniel laughed.
“Run it again.”
The waiter hesitated.
“We did.”
Daniel’s confidence faltered slightly.
“Use another terminal.”
“We tried two.”
The room had grown noticeably quieter.
People were listening.
Watching.
Judging.
Daniel pulled the card from the waiter’s hand.
“That’s impossible.”
The waiter cleared his throat.
“Would you like to provide another form of payment?”
