Determined to solve the puzzle, I began searching online.
I zoomed in on the photos and compared them to images of seeds, insect eggs, bits of insulation, and even tiny mushrooms.
Nothing matched perfectly.
The more I searched, the more unsettled I became.
The objects appeared almost artificial in their symmetry.
Each one was smooth, oval-shaped, and nearly identical to the others.
Most strangely, they seemed to have been placed together intentionally.
Not scattered.
Not dropped.
Arranged.
A Sleepless Night
I considered sweeping them up immediately.
But curiosity won.
I placed a clear glass bowl over the cluster and decided to investigate further the next morning.
That night, sleep came slowly.
Every creak of the house sounded suspicious.
Every shadow seemed slightly darker than usual.
My imagination filled in all the blanks.
By dawn, I was convinced I was either dealing with a strange pest problem or starring in the beginning of a very bad horror movie.
Neither possibility was appealing.
